Causes: Autoimmune diseases ( Hashimotos disease), decreased levels of
thyroid hormones (T3 & T4) slows the basal metabolic
rate (BMR)
x Clinical
Manifestations:
1. Fatigue 2. Hair loss 3. Brittle nails 4. Dry skin 5. Hoarseness
6. Numbness and
tingling of the fingers 7. Voice husky 8. Amenorrhea
9. Subnormal
temperature d pulse rate 10. Gain
weight (even without an increase in food intake).

Sever Hypothyroidism is associated with elevated serum cholesterol level
atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, poor left ventricular function.

Myxedema coma: sever stage of hypothyroidism, involves hypothermia, bradycardia,
hypoventilation and unconsciousness and lethargy.
x Therapeutic
Intervention:
- Restore a normal metabolic
state by replacing the missing hormone.
- Pharmacologic therapy:
synthetic levothyroxine (synthroid or levothroid)
- The dosage for hormone replacement
is based on the patient's serum TSH concentration.
