HYPERTHYROIDISM

Hyperthyroidism:

-          Excessive output of thyroid hormones caused by abnormal stimulation of the thyroid gland by circulating immunoglobulins.
-          Graves disease the most type of hyperthyroidism
-          May appear after an emotional shock, stress, infection.
-          Causes: Thyroiditis and excessive ingestion of thyroid hormone.

x Clinical Manifestations:
1.  Emotionally hyperexcitable.  2. Irritable   3. Apprehensive                          4. Palpitations   5. Pulse rapid    6. Skin is flushed & salmon color, warm, soft, moist.       7. Exophthalmos (bulging eyes).   8. Increased appetite.                        9. Progressive weight loss.      10. Muscular weakness.      11. Amenorrhea.
12.  Change in bowel function.     13.   Osteoporosis.    14. Hypertension

x Therapeutic Intervention:
  1. Radioactive iodine therapy
  2. Beta – adrenergic blocking agent are used adjunctive therapy.
  3. Pharmacological therapy: Radioactive iodine therapy (131I), Antithyroid medication.
x Diet:
