A cough is an action the body takes to get rid of substances that are
irritating to the air passages, which carry the air a person breathes in from
the nose and mouth to the lungs.
A cough is a
reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants such as dust or
smoke. It's rarely a sign of anything serious.
A cough is
considered "acute" if it lasts less than three weeks. It is
considered "chronic" if it lasts longer than eight weeks (four weeks
in children).
